EHL Ingredients, a leading importer, blender and packer of food ingredients from around the world, is experiencing a boost in sales of nuts in the run up to National Nut Day. The celebratory day, dedicated to the taste, versatility and nutritious value of nuts, will be held on the 22nd October.
EHL Ingredients supplies 22 types of nuts including brazil, almonds, walnuts, cashew, hazelnuts, pecans, peanuts, pistachios and pine nuts in bulk quantities to food manufacturers. Certain nuts from the range are performing particularly well and showing strong growth with demand for almonds and walnuts, up by 20% compared to this time last year.
The popularity of nuts can be attributed, in part, to their health benefits. Nuts are an important addition to a wholesome, balanced diet, as they are high in unsaturated fat, which is considered to be effective for combatting conditions such as cardiovascular disease. They are also full of antioxidants and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which stimulate the metabolism.
The inclusion of nuts in healthier snacks and nutritional bars has led to an increase in sales at EHL, as manufacturers are responding to demand and increasingly looking for new ways to incorporate nuts into sweet and savoury foods and offer something unique to the market. Nuts can be cold-pressed together with other ingredients such as fruit to retain their shape and flavour, making them perfect for a variety of goods such as cakes, breads and health snack bars.
In addition, the way that people are buying and consuming snack foods has changed, prompting a demand for nuts. Reports show that the impact of the recession, people’s workloads and busy lifestyles have led to a culture of grabbing food on the move . Given this growing trend, food manufacturers are increasingly developing ‘on the go’ nut-based snack items in formats and pack sizes that appeal to the time-poor consumer. Choosing nuts as a snack is considered to be a convenient and nutritious way to boost energy levels while on the move.
Industry figures from last year demonstrate that nuts accounted for over 37% of all new snack launches, with savoury and salted snacks taking the remainder .
Tasneem Backhouse, Sales and Marketing Director at EHL Ingredients, says: “We began to see an increase in sales of nuts in 2013 and this growth is continuing in 2014. National Nut Day is a great way of raising awareness of the health benefits and uses of nuts among consumers and within the food manufacturing sector.
“There are various applications for nuts in the food industry and manufacturers are constantly looking to introduce new, innovative flavours and varieties to the market for branded and own label products. Nuts are increasingly being incorporated into cereal mixes, sweet and savoury baked goods, desserts and chocolates, snack products as well as toppings, dressings and sauces to add extra crunch and texture, and to boost the health credentials of end products.
“Plus, we are beginning to see the use of exotic flavourings on nuts too, with snacks brands offering sweet and savoury varieties such as lemon and chilli, black pepper and cinnamon, as well as masala and tikka.”
