EHL is teaching the next generation of chefs about the wonderful world of herbs and spices as it has carried out a series of workshops in schools, with more to come once the new term starts in September.
Debadutta Jayaprakash, Msc Food Science, Technical Manager at EHL Ingredients has conducted educational and informative sessions with Year Ten students from Reddish Vale Technology College, Stockport, and with catering students from Tameside College, Greater Manchester. He presented workshops on the history, classification and uses of herbs and spices from around the world.
The interactive sessions showed the groups over 90 examples of herbs, spices and blends with the students learning about culinary and medicinal uses and benefits of the food ingredients.
Kimberley Wood, Catering teacher at Reddish Vale Technology College, comments: “This was a great opportunity for our pupils to learn about international herbs and spices first hand from an industry expert and the session was really engaging and educational. Debadutta’s presentation certainly inspired the students to use a wider range of herbs and spices in their recipes.”
Paul Yau, NVQ Level 2 course teacher and chef at Tameside College, says: “It was great for the students to learn about the different uses and flavours of spices and how to create their own blends too. They will be putting their new knowledge into practice in the demo kitchens so there should be some spicy dishes on the way!”
Debadutta adds: “The pupils at both colleges were really responsive and were keen to get involved, especially with the interactive sessions. It’s great to be teaching the next generation of chefs about the world of herbs and spices and hopefully they will be adding more exotic ingredients to their recipes. They were great groups to work with and I’m looking forward to holding more workshops from September.”
